Extended Biography

Initially I didn't want to give a more extended biography here because I didn't see how it would help anyone by offering more of my past story. I took years to not identify myself with my story and I actually work with clients to let go of the past, especially any residual conflict. But then I thought perhaps someone could relate, feel more connected to themselves, or feel more internally-validated by reading some of these experiences. So here's the Reader's Digest version of a few experiences that helped to shape my path:

Growing up as a military brat (Air Force) traveling around Europe and the US, I moved every few years. This was an excellent background to learn firsthand about change management, relational dynamics, military family trauma and abuse, patriotism, prejudice, as well as cultural, ethnic and religious diversity. I learned to make friends by using humor and empathy, and people began to confide in me at an early age when they had a problem.

My interest in metaphysics and parapsychology began when I lived in the England and Germany (1972-1976) where I spent time tromping around castles, cathedrals, sacred sites and antique shops. Back in the early 70's when you were still able to touch the stones, my mischievous brother and I actually scrambled and free-climbed on the rocks of Stonehenge until we were chided and pulled down by adults. From visiting all the different sites in England, I first realized my intuitive sensitivity, and began to read about the paranormal and metaphysics to better understand my own experiences. Though my parents loved it, I felt that It was difficult being in certain castles or antique shops for too long because it was emotionally draining and overwhelming. Having no sense of boundaries I would pick up information from objects and people alike, so that an "empty" antique shop was too crowded with impressions for me to hang out for a long time. Visiting the dungeons in some castles was like having a flashback of events for me, so I stopped visiting certain places once I realized this. After moving to Germany, my family took a trip to Italy. The Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica, Florence, Venice and Assisi impacted me the most. This triggered an interest in even more spiritual questions by the age of 10. The positive side of the emotional and physical abuse I was experiencing at this time was that it actually helped me become even more intuitive at an early age, and layed the foundation for exploring healing techniques and spiritual practices in my early adult life.

When living in a small, rural town in Illinois at the age of 12, my life was never the same when I first read Illusions - The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach. At the time, my life was tremendously lonely, painful and sad due to being the outsider in the community - not feeling a sense of belonging, verbal and physical abuse, and the overall feeling of not being good enough. While this led to getting straight A's at school, getting in fights (with family and school kids) was the norm, and trips to the principal's office was always less scary than what Dad was going to do 'when he gets home'. The concepts presented in Illusions helped me make sense out of life, and feel some measure of deeper understanding and personal power. They seemed so universal and true that I even tried to convince a Catholic priest that it should be “attached” to the Bible. That same year (1977) the movie "Star Wars" impacted me with it's Zen/Samurai concepts, as well as the idea of a universal Force (instead of judging God) that anyone could use. Already interested in flying as an Air Force kid, and growing up watching shows like Star Trek, Project Bluebook, and Battlestar Galactica, I felt the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" open me up to realize that life could possibly be much different than what the public was told, and much more than I imagined. Having been raised in a military environment I realized that there were always secrets that the general public did not know about, although the possible truths might not be as glamorous as Hollywood presented them. What was real and what was propagated as real to hide the truth? Life has been a quest for discovery of the truth ever since.

As a freshman in high school, I watched upper classmen treat the under classmen like servants, slaves or garbage, which helped me decide that when I was in a position of seniority or power, that I would try to help others instead of make fun of them. Why not build more trust and cooperation instead of hatred and fear? After attending my freshman year in Illinois, we moved to middle Georgia, where from 1980-1983 I attended a high school that was so backwards it still had a segregated prom - one for the blacks and one for the whites. As long as the prom was held off of school grounds, it was considered technically legal. This was finally changed in this particular school in 1987 and as an article in the Atlanta Journal and Constitution newspaper pointed out - thirteen other schools still had segregated proms at the time. Besides extra-curricular activities like sports (cross-country, track, tennis, judo), acting, singing, writing, math team, FBLA, Model UN, anything to pad the resume for college - high school was a time to figure out dating, the South, parents, my German foreign exchange student named Alf, and college choices. Water-skiing in North Georgia and beach gatherings with friends at Lake Tobesofkee were some of the happiest times when I could just relax and be myself.

It was during college (1986) that I had an epiphany about life while doing a wood-carving of a fraternity pledge padle that I was shaped into a sword. (I don't like guns, but I've had an interest in swords since I was a kid living in England) The epiphany was "We're born, go to school, get a job, get married or not, have kids or not, and die. There has to be something more to life, and if there isn't I'm going to create it". At the age of 21, I began seriously reading, studying, taking classes and workshops in topics like astrology, tarot, prophecy, metaphysics, astral projection, Kabbalah, sacred geometry, LRT rebirthing, relationships, ascension and more. By 1987 I grew tired of feeling like I was the 'only one' my age interested in the metaphysical and esoteric, so instead of joining a fraternity, I founded AMPR (Association for Metaphysical and Parapsychological Research, a play on the word 'ampere' or amps, the unit of measurement for power. Okay, I have a geek side I admit it.) to meet other friends my age with similar interests, and to sponsor international speakers and teachers to visit Georgia Tech. It was a test of courage to sit in the Student Center lobby of the most left-brained, logic-oriented university you can imagine and tell people about a club dedicated to researching and sharing metaphysical interests. Initially pursuing electrical engineering and computer programming for several years, I realized that I wanted to work more with individuals and organizations, so I graduated with a degree in Management (Marketing) with a minor in Industrial/Organizational Psychology.

While still in college, I was fortunate enough to meet Gary Bonnell in 1987 at a metaphysical party. I began attending classes and workshops and even worked at the TAP (The Ascension Principle) Center in Atlanta with Gary until 1989. My passion for deeper understanding led me to tour Europe throughout the summer of 1987 and visit sacred communities and sites such as Glastonbury, Goetheannum (Rudolph Steiner's home and school in Dornach, Switzerland), and the Findhorn Community. Hitch-hiking from Norfolk, on the southern coast of England, up to Findhorn, the north-eastern tip of Scotland, was the most exhilarating because of the personal insights and friends that were made. Findhorn was the first conscious community that I experienced and I really enjoyed their focus on nature.

After hearing so much about the beauty of America from foreigner's who had visited more of my home country than I had, I took the summer of 1988 to travel across the entire continental United States and to work at the Grand Canyon, where I met several Indian friends who helped me on my spiritual path. Just after college in 1989, my travels took me to the Florida Keys where I studied, worked and played with dolphins at the Dolphin Research Center. I was also fortunate enough to swim with and care for a baby sperm whale (about 20 feet long) who had been recently stranded and rescued by the Marine Mammal Strand network.

In 1991, I learned to access the Akashic Records in Gary Bonnell's first Akashic Record training in Atlanta. There was a specific technique given out which I rehearsed 3 times before actually taking the workshop. Then in the workshop itself, I was appointed to demonstrate the technique in front of everyone - talk about performance anxiety! Fortunately, I was able to access the Akashic Records with the help of ritual and meditation techniques, but not before humorously demonstrating my inability to light matches. There's nothing like trying to be very solemn in a ritual and repeatedly not being able to light a match. It felt very Woody Allen at first and then more like a Monty Python scene.

While still in Atlanta from 1990-1994, I worked in the corporate world as a computer programmer, trainer and writer. In 1992 my interest in sharing with the Atlanta community led me to host and produce a cable television show called "Wake Up and Be Free" - a live show dedicated to interviewing teachers, healers, and community leaders. My most beloved guest was a Sufi Master called Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan, who subsequently initiated me into the Healing Order of the Sufi Order of the West the following year. Pir Vilayat was an amazing man with many talents and a wonderful sense of humor. Sitting next to him one would get the feeling of dying and being born at the same time - a very profound experience which is difficult to translate into words. That same year my path led me to visit India where I spent most of my time at the Osho International Commune (receiving the sannyasin name Sadhuta, meaning simplicity) learning meditation techniques and exploring possible healing modalities to transition into as a career. I also traveled throughout India visiting temples such as the Taj Mahal, sacred sites like the Ellora and Ajanta caves, and enlightened mystics such as Poonjaji (Papaji) in Lucknow.

Upon returning to Atlanta I began studying bodywork - massage, acupuncture, reflexology and jin shin jyutsu. After working with clients part-time for a year, I decided to move to Boulder in 1994 to become certified in Hypnotherapy. From 1994-2000 I still worked in the corporate arena as a trainer, manager and writer - mostly in the high-tech and medical industries. During this time I continued seeing clients part-time and continued my education in Coaching, Body Psychotherapy, Hakomi Somatics, EMDR and public speaking. Since 2000 my main focus has been to teach, speak, write, work with clients, and utilize my collective skills to create a new transformational process - Authentic Response.

In 2002 I joined Toastmaster's International to become a better trainer and public speaker. I love using humor to invite the audience to not take life so seriously, and as a doorway to dive into more depth. The Humorous and Motivational Speaking competitions were very personally and professionally insightful and entertaining. There's nothing like speaking about spiritual experiences in front of a conservative, religious audience at a competition. Although I didn't move forward past the regional level of competition, I did move through a personal fear of stepping into my truth in front of a not so friendly audience. Nobody threw rocks so it was a great moment.

Several firsts happened in 2003. I was invited to teach a Hakomi Somatics body psychotherapy class at Naropa University in Boulder, and have been invited to teach there ever since. I also began my international travels in 2003 when I was invited to see clients and teach in Tokyo, Japan. I teamed up with my friend and business partner Deirdre Dalton-Brodeur, a Business and Career coach, to form a successful Business Coaching program titled More Profit Less Struggle. Most importantly, I met Carla Salinas, my compassionate partner and "budha buddy", with whom I can share my love and laughter. She is a profound healer, using massage, biodynamic cranio-sacral and polarity, and she also has an integrative cancer coaching business called New Dawn.

In 2007 I continue trips to Japan on a regular basis to teach and see clients, and I'm expanding my plans to include more trips to India, Europe, and throughout North America. I see clients from around the world, and am currently writing books, creating CD's and facilitating trainings.
